GHHI Statement – National Definition of a Zero Emissions Building

The National Definition of a Zero Emissions Building represents a crucial step forward for promoting healthier and more energy-efficient homes. The definition establishes clear criteria for a “zero emissions” building focused on energy efficiency, eliminating on-site emissions, and clean energy. The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) applauds the Biden Administration for sending this market and policy signal that will allow all stakeholders to work in unison toward reducing emissions in buildings across the country.

Evidence continues to build behind the health harms related to combustion appliances, including GHHI’s research demonstrating that eliminating combustion emissions from homes can improve respiratory health outcomes. The robust framework put forth in this definition will help foster healthier and more sustainable communities.  We also recognize that there is still much more work to be done to improve the health and energy efficiency of buildings, particularly in underserved and disinvested communities disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards and inequities. GHHI will continue to work with stakeholders at all levels to ensure that all communities have access to safe, healthy, and energy-efficient housing.
