Gilbert Family Foundation, ProMedica and DTE Energy Launch $20 Million Detroit Home Repair Fund
Statement of Ruth Ann Norton, President and CEO of Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, in Support of Detroit Home Repair Fund
The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) is honored to be a partner in the launch of the Detroit Home Repair Fund. The Fund aligns with and builds on existing home repair assistance programs in Detroit to create scalable housing stability that is only possible when diverse partners come together to pool their resources and expertise. Thanks to the leadership of Detroit’s Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Mary Sheffield, the generous support of the Gilbert Family Foundation, ProMedica and DTE Energy, and the capabilities of GHHI and Enterprise Community Partners, we have an unprecedented opportunity to create far-reaching and lasting impact for 1,000 families who have been denied access to safe, affordable housing due to the structural racism that historically has plagued our nation’s housing system.
About GHHI’s Role in the Detroit Home Repair Fund
GHHI addresses the health and energy efficiency needs of homes across the country through a holistic intervention model that is at the core of the Detroit Home Repair Fund. The GHHI model brings together a cross section of health, energy and housing partners, and looks at housing conditions as integral to the health of families and communities and to improving racial equity. As part of the Detroit Home Repair Fund initiative, GHHI will assist the local partners doing the home repairs, to make sure they have the training and resources needed to holistically meet the needs of families participating in the program. GHHI will provide capacity building support and technical assistance to local community partners in the effective alignment of cross sector housing, energy and health resources in homes. GHHI will also host training sessions for non-profit service provider partners on comprehensive housing assessment tools, healthy homes best practices, and standardization of protocols.

ProMedica and GHHI National Initiative
GHHI thanks its amazing partner ProMedica who has been a national leader in advancing the social determinants of health for low income communities. GHHI is partnering with ProMedica, a national health care organization committed to improving social determinants of health, to improve health through holistic housing interventions in 7,000 low income homes of families and seniors in Detroit and six other priority cities (Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Toledo). ProMedica’s National Social Determinants of Health Institute has identified housing as a key factor impacting health outcomes and is committed to an unprecedented $100 million initial investment through its ProMedica Impact Fund in safe, affordable and energy efficient housing in low income, black and brown communities across the country. This groundbreaking project serves as a national model for how anchor institutions and the healthcare sector can create transformational change through strategic investments and demonstrated leadership in the field.
