GREEN & HEALTHY HOMES INITIATIVE AND AMERIGROUP PARTNER TO SUPPORT BALTIMORE CHILDREN LIVING WITH ASTHMA
$20,000 Grant to Fund Asthma Trigger Reduction Housing Interventions in Baltimore
Baltimore, MD – January 28, 2021 – Amerigroup has awarded the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) a $20,000 grant to provide asthma trigger reduction interventions, food boxes and COVID-19 prevention supplies to low income families in Baltimore. The grant funding announced today will expand the Asthma Program to reduce identified asthma triggers through housing interventions that include GHHI’s installation of air conditioners and dehumidifiers in the homes of Amerigroup members that are experiencing asthma episodes. Air purifying machines will also be installed in the bedrooms of children with asthma to improve indoor air quality so that children can better sleep through the night.
“Amerigroup is a true leader in demonstrating how health care partner investments can address one of the main root causes of asthma episodes by reducing asthma triggers in the home that cause hospitalizations, emergency room visits and missed school days,” stated Ruth Ann Norton, President and CEO of GHHI. “Healthier housing and healthier home environments are critical in advancing the social determinants of health and racial equity.”
“As part of our mission to materially and measurably improve the health of the people and communities we support, Amerigroup is proud to continue its commitment to not only providing healthcare services but also helping to address other issues that impact health and quality of life,” said Vince Ancona, Amerigroup Maryland President. “We believe the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative program will improve living conditions for consumers, a critical social determinant of health, and expand access to care for local children suffering from severe asthma.”
Amerigroup grant funding will also provide for the purchase of food boxes and COVID-19 prevention supplies that GHHI will deliver to families in poverty who have significant resource needs during the COVID crisis.
