Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Announces $225,000 Investment to Eliminate Lead Nationwide
Five Organizations Awarded Inaugural Catalytic Award During Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
Five Additional Organizations to Receive $10,000 Grant to Support Work in Their Communities
BALTIMORE, MD – During National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (October 22-28) the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) announced that five organizations will be part of its Inaugural Cohort of Catalytic Awardees, receiving $25,000 in financial support and an additional $10,000 in technical support. The awards are part of a larger effort by GHHI to eliminate lead poisoning nationwide over the next five years.
“Lead is a completely preventable problem, and one we can eliminate through smart investment and sound policy,” said Ruth Ann Norton, President and CEO of the Green & Health Homes Initiative. “The Inaugural Cohort of Catalytic Awardees consists of organizations taking innovative approaches to combat lead in their communities, and we are honored to partner with them as they work to keep all children safe and healthy.”
The awardees include:
- Loyola University in Chicago, IL
- Black Millennials 4 Flint in Washington, DC
- WE ACT for Environmental Justice in New York, NY
- The Eck Institute for Global Health at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN
- Isles, Inc. in Trenton, NJ
Five additional organizations will receive $10,000 of financial support, serving as Honorary Catalytic Partners, including:
- East Side Neighborhood Development Company in St. Paul, MN
- Environmental Health Coalition in San Diego, CA
- Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo in Buffalo, NY
- Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers in Milwaukee, WI
- #BmoreLEADFree at Morgan State in Baltimore, MD
Every year 535,000 children under the age of six are exposed to lead, a dangerous and deadly toxin that can cause irreversible damage to have life-long health effects. Lead poisoning causes permanent health problems and costs taxpayers more than $50 billion annually.
