GHHI Expands Its Pay for Success Work by Awarding Six New Communities with Support to Advance Healthy Homes Projects

GHHI is advancing a national cohort of projects looking at Pay for Success to fund healthy homes services. The model involves funding services such as remediating asthma triggers like mold or putting in home repairs to prevent falls through private sector investment. If those services lead to positive outcomes such as people not going to the hospital any more for asthma attacks or older adults not needing emergency medical services for future falls, the investment gets paid back.

GHHI has advanced over a dozen Pay for Success projects over the last few years with partners such as Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, UnitedHealthcare in Houston, and Affinity Health Plan in New York City.

We are excited to now expand this work to six other communities: Richmond City Health District (Richmond, VA); People Working Cooperatively (Cincinnati, OH); Integra Community Care Network, LLC (Rhode Island); Baylor College of Medicine, (Houston, TX); green|spaces, (Chattanooga, TN); and UMass Memorial Health Care (Massachusetts).

GHHI will be providing a $50,000 cash award as well as a year of free technical assistance to these Pay for Success projects. Activities will include things such as cost benefit analysis, piloting out services, engaging policy makers and potential investors, and developing the terms of the Pay for Success transaction.

Five of the projects are focusing on in-home resident education and housing interventions that address asthma triggers. The project with People Working Cooperatively will look at home-based fall prevention measures to prevent household injuries for older aged adults.

This work is supported by a 2016 award from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). GHHI is one of only a couple agencies that have had two Pay for Success awards from CNCS. GHHI is seen as a leader in the field as far as looking at how this innovative model can work in in healthcare.
