GHHI Announces Second Round of Lead Poisoning Prevention Catalytic Grants

GHHI is pleased to announce a second competition round of Lead Poisoning Prevention Catalytic Grant Awards. GHHI’s goal is to grow and strengthen the network of organizations dedicated to advancing the National Lead Campaign to end childhood lead poisoning nationwide. GHHI is making catalytic grant investments in organizations in five local jurisdictions that demonstrate excellence and best practices while working to achieve the eradication of lead exposure in their communities. GHHI wants to support grass roots organizations in building their local capacity while expanding the field of lead poisoning prevention leaders across the United States.

Lead Poisoning Prevention Catalytic Grant Awards

The Lead Catalytic Awards will offer five grants of $20,000 each in direct funding and $10,000 in technical assistance to the awardees from GHHI’s team of national experts. These grants support innovative, community-based organizations working to eliminate lead poisoning by: implementing lead poisoning prevention policies and best practices, increasing effective communication and public awareness and developing strategies that increase lead hazard reduction investments in primary prevention.

Overview

The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI), with support from the JPB Foundation, created the GHHI Lead Poisoning Prevention Catalytic Awards to spur grass roots lead poisoning prevention initiatives and policy change at the local level. Decades after ending the use of lead in paint, gasoline and other sources, lead poisoning remains one of the nation’s most devastating environmental health threats, impacting school performance and robbing children of their full potential. GHHI is committed to permanently ending this tragedy. At the National Lead Summit in Washington, DC in December 2016, hundreds of national and local partners signed a Call to Action committing to:

Work to increase investments from new and expanded federal, state, local and private sector funding mechanisms to address lead exposures in housing by making lead testing and hazard remediation of homes a standard practice
Call for the establishment of a Presidential Task Force to create, drive, and implement a national strategy of interagency collaboration with the budget support to eliminate childhood lead exposures
Push to align and prioritize federal, state and local efforts to identify, fund, and enforce existing laws and programs on sources of lead exposure
Support updating of all federal lead regulations to create lead safe, health-based standards and action levels to better engage the health, health care, and housing sectors and allied communities to identify and prevent lead exposure
Implement an enhanced national blood lead surveillance system to identify children who already have elevated blood lead levels for case management, investigation and support
Provide educational, social and clinical services to children exposed to lead to mitigate the harms of lead poisoning
Expand the well-trained, well-protected national workforce capacity for lead hazard remediation to repair and restore communities and their infrastructures

Although it set the stage for continued partnership and provided a foundation for the National Lead Campaign to End Lead Poisoning, the National Lead Summit was only the first step. GHHI continued that momentum by selecting, with the first round of Lead Catalytic Awards, ten organizations from around the country to work on projects and policies to prevent lead poisoning in each respective community. After the success of the first round of awards, where we worked closely with the organizations to build capacity, share best practices, and develop sound policies or programs around lead poisoning prevention, GHHI is proud to announce the second round of Lead Poisoning Prevention Catalytic Grant Awards!

Information on the Lead Catalytic Award: There will be up to five awards and each award will be in three parts: a $20,000 direct grant award; an additional award to cover travel and expenses for a lead convening and training; and $10,000 of in-kind Technical Assistance from GHHI in one or two of the following project categories (selected by the awardee): Communications, Policy, Financing Strategies, Project Development and Implementation, and Data.

Eligible Applicants and Selection Process: Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (or have a valid fiscal agent) demonstrating exemplary leadership in lead poisoning prevention. State and local government entities/agencies are eligible to apply. Only one submission is admissible per applicant and current GHHI Lead Catalytic Grantees are ineligible to apply. Application Requirements

A complete proposal should include three components: 1) Application cover sheet (1 page) as a Word file; 2) Project Proposal Narrative (no longer than 4 pages) as a Word file; and 3) Organization’s financial information. Awardees will be selected based on their ability to meet the following requirements in their application:

1. Proposal Cover Sheet:

Name of applicant(s)
Primary Contact Person and Contact Information for Organization
Proposed award recipient (if different from applicant), i.e. local foundation or partner nonprofit
One paragraph organizational history

2. Project Proposal Narrative that includes:

a. Description of the project or program and how it advances the Call to Action to End Lead Poisoning

b. A case study from applicant’s locality that highlights successes and needs of the project

c. Information on the following key points:

i. Need as demonstrated though local data

ii. Commitment to racial equity and inclusion

iii. Partnerships that collaborate across sectors and populations including community participation

iv. Demonstration of existing or potential for future local political/public will to support project goals (e.g. letter from the mayor or presence of an active coalition) (submit as an attachment, not part of 4-page limit)

d. Identification of the Technical Assistance category requested, what will be achieved as a result of the TA support, and what the support will catalyze

3. Financial Information – submit as attachments

Organization’s top 3 funders list for FY2018 (individuals, foundations, gov., etc.)
