City to Host Kickoff of Green & Healthy Homes Initiative to Reduce Home Health Hazards

The City of South Bend, supported by a $50,000 grant from the State of Indiana, will host a kickoff and first onboarding session for the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) on March 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The kickoff will take place on the 8th floor of the County City Building in the St. Joseph County Health Department conference room. The gathering is open to the media. Mayor Pete Buttigieg will join the gathering for brief opening remarks.

GHHI is a Baltimore-based national nonprofit that helps communities across the country break the link between housing problems and unhealthy children by creating and advocating for healthy, safe, and energy-efficient homes. The City announced the partnership in May 2018.

The GHHI model is focused on streamlining home repair, health, and energy efficiency services so they are easier for South Bend residents to access. The GHHI model has been implemented in 30+ cities, counties, and states and is producing far-reaching outcomes, such as reductions in cost to service programs, medical utilization, missed days of school due to asthma, and missed days of work to take care of sick kids. South Bend is the first city in Indiana to be onboarded.

The City and GHHI will work closely with home repair service providers, the medical and public health communities, local officials and housing providers to develop a comprehensive healthy homes strategy for South Bend.
